Undergraduate research programs build skills for diverse students

چکیده
While many professional societies, colleges, and universities offer undergraduate summer research experience (URE) programs for students, few have systematically evaluated their impacts on the fellows. The American Physiological Society (APS) developed administered multiple UREs with varying target groups: students without prior experiences from disadvantaged groups, including underrepresented racial/ethnic minorities (URM), persons disabilities, first generation college financial or social disadvantages. Each program had specific goals measurable objectives. To assess impact of these programs, APS both documented student completion tasks (e.g., designing experiments, analyzing data, writing abstracts) reliable valid survey instruments to quantify students’ self-ratings a variety career planning skills related Results indicate that fellows as whole most individual gained knowledge in numerous areas: experimental design, data management, lab safety, statistical analysis, presentation, scientific writing, networking, networking at meetings, authorship attribution, animal use research, human subjects roles mates mentors, training planning. Furthermore, there were differences within diversity comparison groups (women vs. men, URM non-URM fellows, etc.). Suggestions improvement URE are proposed.

متن کاملPILOTing Undergraduate Students to Hands-On Teaching and Research Skills†
Undergraduate research can make a positive impact on science education. Unfortunately, the one student-one mentor paradigm of undergraduate research generates a wide range of variability in the student's experience and further limits its availability to a select few students. In contrast, a single faculty member can offer multiple undergraduate teaching positions that provide a consistent exper...

The purpose of this proposed study is to determine if Psychological Capital (PsyCap), collective orientation, and learning goal-orientation can assess the impact of the development of the following ABET student outcomes: teamwork (d), ethics (f), communication (g), life-long learning (i) and awareness of contemporary issues (j), throughout an engineering student’s academic career. We hypothesiz...
متن کاملWhat skills should students of undergraduate biochemistry and molecular biology programs have upon graduation?
Biochemistry and molecular biology (BMB) students should demonstrate proficiency in the foundational concepts of the discipline and possess the skills needed to practice as professionals. To ascertain the skills that should be required, groups of BMB educators met in several focused workshops to discuss the expectations with the ultimate goal of clearly articulating the skills required. The res...
